Vitamin D & Alzheimers

A study, funded by the Shepherd Foundation, and titled 'The Shepherd Foundation Study into Alzheimer' disease', was conducted during 2007-8.

The aim was to further explore the fact that residents participating in our vitamin D falls prevention studies demonstrated a relationship between their vitamin D blood level and scores on a test of their memory and thinking ability. This and other evidence suggests that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimers disease and this is therefore an important question that warrants proper scientific examination.

The principal researchers and organisations involved with Royal Freemasons in this new study were Dr Mark Stein from The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Professor Leonard Harrison from The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. The participants in the study, which were mostly community dwelling individuals recruited through wide dissemination of information about the research.

A manuscript reporting the result of this study has been submitted for publication.
