Pain & Dementia

There remains a crucial need for more work in understanding how pain affects older people who cannot report their suffering as a result of dementia.

During 2007 and 2008 Royal Freemasons was a key collaborator in an ongoing NHMRC funded program entitled New Methods of Pain Assessment in Non-Verbal Older Adults with Dementia aimed at establishing better validated and more reliable ways to identify pain and perform pain assessments in people with dementia. A collaborative research team led by Associate Professor Stephen Gibson from the National Ageing Research Institute included Royal Freemasons. All of our facilities have been involved as key sites during the conduct of this study.

Manuscripts reporting the outcomes of this research are currently in preparation.
