Pain
Following a pilot study at Centennial Lodge performed under supervision by a visiting geriatrician in training from Singapore, Royal Freemasons played a key role, between 2001 and 2005, in writing, field testing, and launching the Australian Pain Society (APS) Residential Aged Care Pain Management Guidelines. Funding for the field-testing studies at Royal Freemasons was provided by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA). On completion of this work 3500 copies of the new guidelines were purchased by DoHA for distribution to all Australian aged care homes. The guidelines have achieved international recognition and are recommended by the International Association for the Study of Pain to pain practitioners world wide, and particularly to those with patients in nursing homes.
